Just thought I'd write a little something to let you know how I've lost some weight.

I got into cycling at the back end of 2009 but nothing too serious, got a Specialised Tricross Sport which I started on doing local rides building up from 30, 40, 55 then 60 miles last year then unfortunately had it nicked last September, went 2 weeks without a bike then went in for a Merida Cyclocross 3, been out on the road, over Llandegla MTB blue course and around Delemere forest racking up a good few miles. With work I go out to Afghanistan supporting the troops with technical solutions on the vehicles we build, this is where I am writing from now. I came out here in the middle of February weighing in at a hefty 88kg, I am 170cm so had a BMI of 30.4 meaning I was in the very overweight catagory. I decided while I am out here I will do something about it and lose some weight.

As a bit of motivation I signed up for the Pain on the Plain 100 mile sportive for when I went home at the end of May/ beginning of June for a 3 week break. I have been going to the gym using the cross trainer doing the weight loss programme, spinning sessions(organised lessons), hill sessions on the spinning bike and a little bit running. When I went home for my 3 weeks I went out for a couple of training sessions on the road before doing my first 100 miler. My time I set myself for the 100 miles was around 7 hours but when I finished I had a nice suprise by completing it in 6 hours 32 minutes including a 15 minute food break at the 70 mile point.

Since I got back out here in Afghanistan I have kept up with my gym sessions although not quite as hard as before my break and have signed up for the Etape Cymru in October as a bit of motivation to keep me going.

I am now down 60kg which now equates to a BMI of 21.7 which is in the middle of the healthy range for my height. I'm feeling fit and now looking great for it too. The only problem I had though was when I went home I had to buy a whole new wardrobe as all my clothes were far too big, went from a 36 inch waist to a 32 inch, cost me a bloody fortune this getting fit lark!!!!!

If I can do it, with a little motivation and a lot of determination anyone can!!!

Good luck all

Sean

Well done, nice to see somebody putting effort into improving their body, even under your very stressed situation. Do not mention the fat word though I got in trouble for that.
