When you consider the flexing that a rim encounters over the period of a ride, as well as some of the sketchy alloys used from time to time in their construction, I am always impressed we do not see more rim failure.

My Mavic ceramic rim failed exactly as the one in the OP and there are reports of many others doing the same.

The MA3 apparently had an ERD of 607mm - http://www.kstoerz.com/freespoke/rim/288
Rigida Chrina has a 608 ERD (Spa Cycles). Max 28mm tyres

Similar cracking has always happened (I've had it on Mavic Module 3 and 4 in the early 90s), but it's more common nowadays due to a combination of "my rim's lighter than your rim" marketing and the prevalence of thick anodizing. The basic problem is spoke tension higher than the rim will cope with.

I checked the front rim of my virtuoso today and there a definite bulge all the way round close to the outside edge compared to the rest of the rim , methinks it might be time to look into a new rim or just get a new wheel from decathlon for £25, i figure the wheel owes me nowt as it has got to have 15k miles on it easy .
