Going downhill and could not avoid a massive pot hole, was as wide as the road.

Double blow out.

The dent eats right into the braking area.

The rear might be as bad.

I think I'd be making a damages claim there, did you take a photo of the hole?

Ahhh man I'm sorry. Ive hit some big ones recently with the weather covering up holes I usually sub-conciously avoid. Nothing quite so bad yet but I hope the fix isnt too costly.

I have to commute home on it shortly - will see how bad it is.

Contact the authority responsible ask for a claim form and fill it out.

They supposedly aren't responsible until they are made aware, but someone else may have made them aware. I submitted a form last winter and was surprised to get 70quid paid out.

A claim forms request also means the hole is filled postehaste.

We tried to claim for a bent rim from Lancashire. After many many weeks they sent us a huge envelope full of copies of all the defect reports from the last few months which did not include the pothole that bent the rim. Their reasoning was that since nobody had reported the hole they couldn't be blamed and the letter more or less challenged us to sue them in Court.

I managed to get a pair of pliers on the rim and bend it back, I will see if I can get it level - the wheel is still true.

Cite the Freedom of Information Act 2000, to obtain details of the Council’s road inspection reports for the road where the pothole was located. This will detail inspections, works carried out and reports of defects – such as potholes. This will reveal if the council was aware of the pothole, or had breached its own regulations for regular inspections of the road in question. If so – repeat your claim.

There are so many nasty potholes around Berkshire and Oxfordshire at the moment. I blame Brexit

Ummmm.... if you read my post you'll see that they sent us all the reports going back for many months to prove that nobody had reported it. It was a wad of about thirty sheets of A4. The claim was only for £30 for a new rim so they are counting on me not persisting, which I can't be bothered to do.

I think the inferance may have been they have only sent you some of the docs... But for £30 how much time and effort do you put in.
If my claim for £70 had been rejected I wouldn't have pursued it.

This experience has lead me to always report potholes and road defects, simply so I can recover my costs should I need to. It is however a massively demoralizing "why do i bother" exercise as the local authority don't rush. The see "edge [of road] defects" reports as a lower priority.

On the upside 2-3 years ago caught a nick at the side of a Unitied Utilities man hole which caused a cut to a sidewall. I reported it to UU who a few days later A) Repaired the problem and B) contacted me a to ask the cost of the tyre, they then sent me a "goodwill" cheque for the tyre rounded UP £7-50 to the nearest tenner.
