I was wondering how anyone was expected to read such a tiny sign from the footplate of a passing locomotive. And how do you keep your engine quiet?

Fairly common sign where locomotives were expected to stand near residential buildings. The main way of keeping a stationary steam locomotive quiet would be managing the draught and fire to avoid blowing off, a wasteful phenomenon that was not encouraged under any circumstances. Modern signs presumably do not mention steam.
