Trek/Gary Fisher Sawyer – 2011 model from Wheelbase for £899, Alfine 11 speed hub etc. from Planet X/On-One for £399. All lovingly put together by the long suffering Rob at Withington Cycles in Manchester, who only charged £1 per expletive. Maybe when he's forgotten about it, a Gates Carbon belt drive?

Photo taken at Derwent Reservoir.

Lovely looking bike. Would the frame need cut to fit the belt drive?

Ta – very much a bike bought with the heart, rather than the head, but as it's my first ever mountain bike I don't know any better :-) Makes you appreciate a road bike for speed and distance all the more!

Got the idea for putting on all the white bits from a photo of one sponsored by Subaru.

The frame doesn't need to be cut to take a belt drive – another reason people seem to be wishing Trek would do it as a frame only. For a bike that's usually £1200 in standard guise the kit is pretty low-end (Avid Juicy 3 brakes, SRAM X5/X7 and assorted bits out of the Bontrager parts bin).

> "Chain's a bit slack" – I think you're right. Rob at the shop is going to be swearing again!

The original plan was to have an Alfine chain ring etc on the front, but after several expletives and a phone call to Shimano it was discovered it won't fit the bottom bracket, so one of the existing chain rings was used. Means the lowest gears won't get me up the steepest hills, but I'll stick with it for now.
