Read your diary and couldn't help noticing your resolution:

"Next year I’m going to do something special. I'm going to cycle somewhere ridiculously far away for a ridiculous reason – just to say I did it."

I'm not quite sure how ridiculously far away you mean, but most people (who haven't tried it) certainly find cycling overnight from London to Brighton or Whitstable fairly ridiculous. Those of us who know otherwise do this:
