Would something like this be ok do you think? I really can't bring myself to wear lycra.....I'd look like "the only one in the village"

Yes, those or the MTB ones Abo linked to. The good thing about the ones with padded liners is that you can always throw the liner away if/when you decide you don't need them, but you'll still have the shorts. I've got several pairs of baggy shorts which used to have liners.

Ok day 2 of my adventure:

Much better effort today probably because I had a route planned. Of course my 2.5 mile route turned into 3.36 miles as I missed a turning - whoops.

I tried mixing it up with the traffic but I chickened out on the first roundabout. Didn't help that as I tried looking behind me to make sure it was safe to pull round a parked car I almost fell off.....

Anyway my 3.36 was covered in 32 minutes - including a couple of stops to check my gps and make sure I was going the right way - didn't feel out of breath at all other then the little hill right at the beginning of the route.

According to MapMyRide my avergae speed was 6.4mph but that included stopping at a lot of side roads to make sure there were no cars.

Felt fine during the ride but now my legs are a bit wobbly (and my bum is killing me!) - haven't got the hang of a constant cadence, but I'm sure it will come . It's more of a peddle for a bit, coast for a bit and I don't think I'm using the gears as efficiently as I could. The left lever stays in 2 and I use the right lever to shift up on the flats and down on the up-slopes.

Day off tomorrow before a long (hopefully an hour or so) ride on Saturday :-)
