My ears were freezing this morning

And it is only August! I think I need to get myself some kind of balaclava.

Had a wee look on ebay and there are a lot to choose from (and some would make me look very, very dodgy!).

What would you all recommend wearing?

A buff. It keeps you cool in summer ans warm in winter and stops the helmet pads getting smelly. If you do the inside-out-inside thing it makes a knot at the back of your head and you can wear it above the ears or just pull it down over the ears if it gets chilly.

I agree, went over Jeffrey hill yesterday for tea at Chipping corner cafe and my hands were freezing in the cold northerly on top of the fell.

Buff. A proper Buff too, not a "buff".

You will thank me in 15 years time when you are still wearing it and it still just needs a quick rinse whilst you are washing your hands every few days.

I wear mine around my neck rather than head, pulling it up over the mouth keeps out all the bugs and other unintended appetisers (such as horse poo flicked up by the bike you are following) along the way, and pulling it over my ears stops all wind noise.

At the top of Oxenhope yesterday I wished I had my full finger gloves and not my summer mitts :cold:

Cheaper and many, many more alternative uses, as you can see above, as a helmet liner, scarf, mouth guard, headband (I don't know how long your hair is but my daughter uses it like that), wrist band (for sweat absorption), and sun hat.

In the height of summer (April 21st, I think it was this year  ) you can run it under the cold tap for a few seconds and wear it round your neck, where it will keep you cool for hours. When you get somewhere, you can tie one end and use it as a bag to be able to empty your pockets and sit comfortably.

I wear one all year round, whenever I'm out on two wheels whether on bike or motorbike. It has many, many more uses.

You can also wear it as a balaclava, whereas a balaclava will do few of the above.

Why a buff, and not a silky balaclava?

Balaclavas ceased to be cool back in '63. Buffs OTOH are cool.

Actually they can be used as a balaclava. I don't have a proper buff but a Cycling Plus freebie which I wouldn't be without... One of these days when I'm feeling flush I might fork out on a proper one, but for now, I wear mine round the neck as a scarf most of the time as it keeps the cold draughts out, but over the mouth works if its getting parky and up over the ears for the balaclava version. Bandana and beanies are possible. Amazing what you can do with a tube of cloth.
