Thanks all, i think i'll try out the phone apps first, if i'm not entirely satisfied i'll think more about investing in a dedicated cycling computer, and will then have to decide whether to buy one of the magnetic types or save for one of the higher end gps computers.

The advantages of a wired dedicated unit are mainly no loss of signal (or wait to acquire one), very low battery consumption, freedom from interference (wired only), and simplicity. I use a phone with Bikecomputer on it sometimes, but the VDO computer is overall the most useful.

If you go for a gps recorder, the main benefit is more accuracy, also if used with a speed/cad sensor nor anomalous readings (you dont get these with purely a bike computer either), using either a phone or a gps (though less often) will some times give you false max speeds, with a speed sensor this doesn't happen.
If you find using the phone and online data information useful, save up for a dedicated gps recorder, if it's not your thing as Davidc says a simple bike computer will do most things, even H.R. and cad if you want to pursue that avenue.

Just don't bother with the MyCyclingLog API, that the software developers amongst us have used in the past to automate their bike trip uploads. I was using it for a while, but then the site admin decided to disable it, with no notification to anyone.

As others have mentioned Strava is an app which can be downlaoded easily, @Nigelnaturist's case for Edmondo is well thought out - I haven't gotten that far yet.

re: cycle computers, I have a cateye velo 8 which came with the bike, it's wired meaning you don't have to worry about the detectors battery dying on you (I'm not bothered about a line running up my fork) and I'm very happy with it

You have to get Auntie_Helen who is Group Admin to sign you in to the CycleChat Group. When your name appears in the group member list you can add your trips by clicking on Add(4th left at the top below the MCL logo) and filling in the details.

These thread revivals do my head in:biggrin:.
I thought it was a new thread and read on down until i came to the one where a guy says he has only been cycling in shorts and singlet, wtf:eek:.^_^
