Hi folks,
I've just signed up to My Cycle Log, as recommended to me by @ThinAir. I've joined the CycleChat group and had a browse of the site.
I know the following may be a daft questions but i'm new to this stuff lol.
What do i do next? How do i track my rides? Do i need one of those bike computer thingys? Will an app on my Samsung Galaxy S2 do the same job? Can anyone recommend a bike computer (if i need one) for around the £50 mark or less?

Cheers folks, Mark.

From what I understand you tap in your distance cycled/time elapsed and it can give the distance to year etc. If you want to set a ticker as a signature then this could be of help

I use Strava (download it free in the App Store), and use this to get the data to put into my cycling log. Strava gives you lots of data which is great, I just like the idea of being in a league which is why I like to use mycyclinglog :smile:but Strava will give you some really interesting stats and save you some money on an expensive computer

Edit: sorry... The Samsung version of the App Store

If you don't have a computer - you can go on a mapping site after your ride and work out your distance. Then you enter this and the time taken on mycyclinglog.

Obviously a computer is better - I'll let others advise ref the £50 as I only have (expensive) Garmins.

For your basic stuff an app on the phone is good for short distance/time as they do eat battery life. Endomondo is probably the best recording app as you can export a tcx file from their site, and gives good stats on the ride, better than strava (elevation is usually wrong on strava). The tcx file can then be imported to strava or any other site, I know its a two step process but it is probably the best way, plus you have a copy of your own file as well, like you would get if you used a dedicated gps computer. Then save and get a dedicated gps unit.

Not sure you really need a phone mount? I have a Galaxy S2 and use strava and phone slips in jacket or jersey pocket quite easily.

I've only been out wearing t-shirt & shorts so far due to the pleasant weather, i guess as it gets colder and i wear more layers i'll no doubt have some pockets available, but for now at least, i need to buy some kind of mount or make something with elastic bands and double sided sticky tape.

You can get cycle computers for much less than £50. These are good and reliable. Leave it on the bike and it just starts when you do without needing your phone. Battery life about 2 1/2 years.

If I was you I would just get a cheap cycle computer. You can get them for waaay less than 50 quid. When you're done with the ride, goto the Add page on My Cycling Log and input the tasty data

I have a spreadsheet that for the most part just uses basic data distance, time Elevation can be got from gpsies (or alot of other mapping sites), this is what I did till I upgraded, I currently use strava to see my own personal improvements over time, some rides are just for the ride some for improvements, and it is nice to how you improve over time, but it's not everything cycling is about.
Going to extremes I can collate data on sp,avg sp, elevation, avg elevation, ft/mile, avg cad, gear inch, difficulty of ride, difficulty per ride, you get the idea, but all of that is worked out from basic data speed, distance, time, elevation and cadence, all of that can done from a pretty basic comp with cadence and mapping software.
