I had a creaking under load which was doing my head in.In desperation stripped and regreased front forks and bearings. Creaking then stopped.

I've lubed the chain, and the creaks were still there.

I think now that it's the crankset (the arm which connect the pedals with the chainrings?) because when I pushed harder with my feet, the creaks became louder and the sound is almost certainly coming from the pedal/front chainring areas, unless I'm deaf

how do I tighten/fix cranksets?

not the saddle, as I've tried beating it a bit, no creaks were heard
Hi!
I had the same problem a couple of weeks ago - actually, forgot to thank the contributors to the know-how forum, did not post a thread about the creak because I've read all the previous ones, should still have posted a thank you
Anyhow, creak, creak, creak ... it was not the usual suspects suggested above, the cranks needed a wee tightening up, but, still, creak ... uff!
I remembered somebody suggesting pedaling out of the saddle to restrict the culprit, so with great effort  I did this.
I had previously tried manhandling the saddle trying to replicate the noise, no joy.
However, while pedaling out of the saddle, it's a miracle! no creak!
Saddle rails bolt needed doing up half a turn, no more squeak. Result!
For good measure I also gave the area a squirt of GT85.

I've recently been plagued by a mysterious creaking sound on my road bike. Try as I might I simply couldn't pin down the source. It seemed to be coming from each area I looked at as I was riding along. This went on for a couple of weeks, until I had a eureka moment on the local cycle trail. The creaking was finally located!
And the culprit was?.............

My helmet!
The straps were moving slightly on the polystyrene shell, causing an imperceptibly small creak - which sounded a lot louder when the helmet was worn. No wonder I couldn't find the source of the creak as it was following me around!
A quick application of a small amount of suitable lubricant on the strap and..........blissful silence!

good point about the lubrication. Come to think of it, I haven't lubricated the chains since I bought the bike months ago. I'll try oiling it up a bit now to see if it works
Yes but that isn't a proper test. Because whacking a saddle around a bit isn't the same load as sitting on it and pedalling hard.

You need to try it with a different saddle, keeping all other parameters identical. This would rule out whether or not it was the saddle that creaked.

The same goes for the "it's not the seatpost" assumption you made earlier!

I had the same a little while ago - the culprit was the BB, which needed a clean. It was blooming annoying while it lasted though - good luck sorting it out!
