I have a bike that I use in bad weather, I have gradually upgraded all the basic bits and bobs so that I feel happy with the overall ride. However, the crank is mounted on an old fashioned square taper BB with seperate bearings , axle and cups. I want to relace this with one of the more reliable sealed units, however seem unable to shift the cup on the drive side. I have stripped down and removed all the assembly 3 times now but always get stuck when trying to remove that last piece. Of course I wish to maintain the integratey of the thread in the frame but really dont care if I end up destroying the offending cup. Any words of wisdom will be greatly appreciated.

Get a big nut and bolt. I use an M12 (I think). Then follow the instructions by The Sainted Sheldon here. Scroll down to the Fixed Cup Tools bit. It's a beautifully simple method that Just Works.

Most bike shops will have specialist tools to remove stubborn cups of all types, usually takes just a couple of minutes.

I once had the very same problem you are describing and I got my car mechanic to shift it using a vice, terribly simple.

or use your wifes hairdryer on the shell as even a small amount of heat is enough to help loosen the things. DO NOT USE NAKED FLAMES as the grease inside ( Ha that would be why we need to strip it down as there is no feckin grease in the bearings) can catch fire

You're not a musician are you? If you are, did you get Tulips on your Hammond Novachord for those flowers?

Sorry to ask the question, but as Globalti implied, are you turning it the correct way?
One side has a left handed thread. So the old righty tighty lefty loosey doesn’t work.
Ohhhh yes, I have to admit that I wondered that myself , but yes, I am turning, or trying to turn the right way
