Hi I'm 13 years old and i have been cycling now on my Bianchi road bike for 8 months propley now and i was wondering is my speed good? on 35-45 mile cycles i can keep an average of 15mph and anything under about 25 i can do 15.5mph-16. I am now part of a cycling club where i live and i cycle about 100 miles a week, i would do more but school takes over sometimes but in the holidays i go more often. so i was just wondering if you had any advice or if my speed is good?
Thanks Jack

That's pretty good going. I'm finding it harder to belt out an average above 15 as I get older, though I somehow managed 18.8 the other day.

Yes doing just fine. Ride more, eat clean, get 8 hours sleep a night and one day of physical rest a week and you'll improve on that. Don't fall into the trap of some folk, who go OTT with specialist training regimes while ignoring the basics.

I used to cycle to school but had my bike stolen from the school bike rack when I was the same age as you. It was 20 years before I got another bike. I really regret those lost cycling years ... You are doing well, so keep it up, Jack!

(PS You put your post in the wrong sub-forum. Perhaps somewhere like Training and Nutrition would have been better?)

Let your schoolwork take over if it has to. At this stage it is more important than cycling.

Cycle when you can and enjoy it.

AS others have said good work but make sure enjoying it stays paramount! Like @ColinJ I cycled as a child but by the time I turned 17 and got my driving licence I gave up. 17 years later I do everyting I can to avoid the car and travel on the bike or foot. Cycle every day even if just a short trip to the shops and take on board the comments about resting and eating well.

Your speed is what it is. It will be better than some in your age group, equal to others in your age group, although slower than the faster riders for your age group. It all depends what you are comparing it against.

Hi Jack,

Average speed is not particularly relevant, since it depends on so many things. My 13 year old averaged around 18 on a 52 mile group ride, but some rides it can be lower. Also I find average speed calculations can vary quite a lot according to device, eg my ride yesterday I had an 18 mph average on my Bryton, and 16.5 on my iPhone Map My Ride app.

If you have a basic speedo for example, your adjusted average speed may be 18 taking into account stops at lights etc.

So average speed is useful to track your own progress, especially on regular routes, but not so much for comparing to others. I think the fact that you're doin the distances is great, and keep doing what you're doing, though if you have a track or velodrome nearby, you might want to get some training there, pick up riding skills from coaches.

In an ideal world, if you get an opportunity to get a GPS cycle computer, which you can upload to Strava, you'll see your time for specific splits, so you'll really be able to track and measure your progress.

Hi and :welcome: Jack. You're doing well. Keep enjoying the rides and the speed will take care of itself.:okay:

By the way, I've moved the thread as it was hidden away in the clothing section. You should get a bigger audience in here.

:welcome: Like others have said the speed is good but your school work should come first. Club riding will help improve average speed. Just enjoy it ... your only young once. ^_^
