Ok for only 20 miles ish today and my ass is killing.

How do you lads do it.
I have padded bottom but the padding is crap in the wrong place more around the front really....

What gel seats do you lads have because i need one really

Then get a pair of padded shorts or bibs that fit.

Gel saddles are the devils work.

Reading the thread title I wondered who or what and how your ass was killing:sad:.
20 miles on a gel seat would hurt anyones arse.
It can be worth getting someone who knows to observe your position on the bike and your pedalling action, then they could suggest adjustments. I would suggest it is better to get the seat and adjustments right before rushing out to spend money on padded shorts which may not be required for all but the longest distances.

It's more likely that your saddle is the wrong size. You should be sitting on your sit bones (the pointy bits at the bottom of your pelvis). Some bike shops have a nifty little pad to measure this, and then they'll get you a saddle to fit. After riding around for the first few years on a pin head, not realising this was my problem, it's the first thing i do now when i get a new bike.

Get better shorts that fit. What saddle is it? Specialized will measure your sit bones, and sell you a saddle that you can test for 30 days. Probably be £50+ like a good pair of shorts

How much riding are you doing, and for how long since ?

Agree with getting better fitting shorts.
What saddle do you have? Gel is not the answer.
Saddles are very personal. Sometimes you need to try a few. For me the Fizik Arione, the fabulously cheap Charge Spoon and the Brooks B17 all work. The Spoon is excellent for the price ... but we're all different.

If the pain is from the perineum then better shorts or an adjustment to saddle angle might help. Unintentionally, I tipped my saddle ever so slightly forward, may be a couple of degrees. It allowed me to sit back in the saddle without putting pressure in that area, so I left it.

I get a little numb around the sit bones where I lack a bit of natural padding but it's easing with every ride.

To see if your seat is the correct size you can sit on some foil placed on a flat surface, like stairs. Measure distance between the two indentations your sit bones make and compare to the width of your saddle.

My saddle is a spesh, got it fitted a couple of months ago in my local Leisure Lakes shop on their arseometer ^_^

The saddle was actually only about £25 IIRC

Took a little while to get the seat position front to back set up right on the rails, and then swapped out about 3 stems to get the reach right for me.

Has made just a world of difference

As long as I breathe, I attack.
Gel saddles tend to feel comfy to start with but after a while you sink into it and can rub /irritate you more than a well adjusted seat and a good fitting pair of padded shorts.
Plenty of people have their favourite pairs of shorts , i personally have always got on well with the 5 rated shorts from decathlon.

I must be one of the lucky ones, never had any problems with ass pain regardless of the seat normal shorts always worn and standard seat that came with the bike, do feel for you all suffering though I can imagine the awkwardness of it all
