Earlier this evening whilst I was at the bridge club (and was thus sitting down for a prolonged period) my legs, especially the calves started to ache uncomfortably. When I pressed my thumb into my calves it felt rather like the delayed onset muscle soreness you sometimes get the morning after you've done some intense activity. My weeks activity was as follows: 30 miles cycling on Sunday and a five mile walk, Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, cycling to work (19 mile round trip) plus a few other shorter journeys on those evenings as well. I also had a sports massage last Saturday, don't know if that would have had an influence. Does anyone have any ideas of what to do to minimize the chance of this soreness occurring, and what best to do about it? I have heard somewhere that immersion in cold water is beneficial after exertion; there is an outdoor pool at work I could use if anyone were to recommend that.

I was on the heavy mountain bike this week and last week but did not feel I was trying to rush.

Here for rides.
When I was rugby reffing I tried one once. A large water butt in the changing room. Won't be doing that again.

Not everyone agrees it seems.

In the study 1 min immersions were used and the results then related to untrained individuals.

I always used 15-20 min immersions and am highly trained (still doing 23min 10mTTs at age 57). I stand by my previous assertion with absolute conviction - mainly because the system worked!

At least one study has concluded that what works for some won't work for others.

You keep quoting studies that don't refer to the original post or my original comment.

1 min immersions would, IMO, be useless for DOMS as I wouldn't think they would be long enough to reach deep into the tissue.

I never said I thought that ice immersions would be good for consecutive day hard efforts - just that they are excellent for DOMS. I follow a strictly hard day/easy day training regime as I feel that this gives better results, esp at my age. Despite training very hard for half the week at certain times of the year I don't suffer much from DOMS as I build the training effort during defined stages of the competitive season or off season.

If cold baths don't work for you, well there you go - like everything else in life you just have to try it and see. No matter how excellent a treatment for any problem happens to be it is probably impossible to find a 100% success rate.

They work for you. Anecdotal evidence. End of.

Now your writing nonsense - even your quoted studies stated they saw benefits for some - not just me.

But hey, let's not fall out - I was just trying to help someone in my original post. I don't want to be arguementative.

Peace bro :becool:

What!!!!! Now you're saying that not only do I need to get in an ice bath, but I have to stay in it.... for 15 to 20 minutes??? That's just not going to happen :becool:
