I have just returned to cycling after 20 year to find that I suffer from the same painful thigh muscle pains that I suffered all those years ago which made me quit the sport. They tend to start a few days after a training ride and they last about 3 days before they clear up.....this happens around every three month where between I can ride as hard as I like without any effects...please help as this is driving me nuts and I may have to cancel the eddy Merckx bike I have just ordered....

Sounds like an underlying issue. Sports physio or GP wouldn't be bad places to start.

i get a lot of muscle aches but put this down to age, do you feel its more than that?

Yes I do...I have competed in a lot of sports at a competitive level since quitting cycling twenty four year ago and have had no cramping/muscle issues. I cover miles and miles with my other pastime of fellwalking with no issues. I have been back on the bike about 4 month and at the back of my mind was just waiting for the pain to start again and sure enough it did. I have been taking electrolytes religiously thinking I had cracked it. I'm 55 year old and very fit for my age but I think that I may now have to now hang my bike up for good which is the last thing I want to do.

Visited a sports physio today who specialises in cycling. He advised me that it's my lack of flexibility in my lower body and my alignment, which is out, that is causing neurological pain. He has gave me a stretching programme to follow and also advised that I have regular massages to focus on my inflexible parts......mnnnnnn time will tell but I will stick with the programme......
