My wife and I decided to try to cycle to Biddestone village this afternoon as it was nice and warm and it would allow my wife to try out her new bike. My wife hasn't ridden for years and so she is lacking confidence. We set off up the road a bit shaky, and then along the cycle path. My wife wanted the saddle set so that she could put her feet on the ground if she needed to stop. I suppose it is how we all learned to ride at first, using our feet as brakes. After about a mile my wife gave up saying that it was too twitchy and walked home.
When we got back I tried her bike out, I didn't get far the saddle felt way too low my knees felt like they were touching my ears. I raised the saddle and tried again, it was a bit better but it still felt twitchy. the bike has wide bars which are bent back slightly. I would prefer narrower bars. The other thing I noticed is that the crank arms feel too long 7 inches measured centre to centre, the ones on my bikes are 6.5.
My thinking is that by raising the saddle a bit ,going for a shorter crank it should stop the knee touching ear syndrome and perhaps make it more rideable.
