Nothing more than I did for nearly 2 years. Was doing 22 miles each way minimum though admittedly only with around 200m climbing each way and only 3-4 times a week. But between you and I he is a much stronger, faster cyclist than I and it will get rid of his beer belly and make him look slimmer again!
Sadly and probably correctly again between you and I,he has also pointed out that 400m lower will probably be way too warm for me but I need to look up if it is actually 400m lower down the mountains of if he is making that bit up!
You were lucky. 2 years ago the telephone line supplying our (now old) Lane was hit by lightening and someone's socket was blown off the wall. We were away from home at the time, me for some time (solo tour) and my hubby joining me for the weekend. He left the laptop plugged into the mains through an old surge protector and the network cable plugged into the router. Obviously the router was on.... We lost the laptop, router and telephone plus the surge protector and the laptop insurance didn't cover lightening strikes! Mind you BT had to recable the entire lane which took months. That's only the damage I got to know about as well. We spent 6 months with intermittent telephone and broadband (as did many others).
