A week ago, I didn't know that there was such a thing as an Arctic vortex. It sounds truly horrendous. Do you all huddle together in one room to keep warm?

No, just switch on the fireplace. Maybe wear extra clothes. Polar Vortex has happened before, in the nineties, and also the seventies. Never fun, but while it lasts, I usually do not have to go to work. I get to go in late today. Should be near 35 f by Sat.

I love beagles...only dog I would consider owning I think

My friend has a beagle. It appears to be completely untrainable but that may have to do with the fact he is rubbish training dogs.

Not at all. I have an Elizabethan and a Harrier, and they are rubbish dogs at following commands. Although very good at what they do. They take longer to train about going outside, longer to train about tricks, and longer to train about not barking and howling. I would not trade them for anything, however. If you can deal with Beagles, you can deal with any dog.
