Multitool

I lent my mutuitool chain breaker to a poor unfortunate I met on the road (and saved his day) I've never actually used it myself. At home I have a big rufty tufty chain breaker that I use in preference.

That reminds me of why I still carry around the cheap rubbish multitool

as well as the half decent one

the cheap one has a chain breaker

and "yes" I do have a better one in the bike shed -

Actually the chain breaker on my Topeak multi tool is perfectly adequate. I've used it at home when my proper one is temporarily in hiding.

Multi tools are the tool of last resort.
If you are at home then you almost certainly have a bigger better tool dedicated to the job.
So my multi tool usage is only in emergencies.

Absolutely. The multitool sits in my saddle bag, and gets used when I need to fix something out on the road.

As you say, at home I have better tools for every job.

I have a multi-tool which I was carrying in my saddle bag but decided that it would be simpler to replace them with individual tools that actually fit my bike.

That reminds me of when I went out with the CTC once an one rider struggled to get up one of the largest hills in the Lammermuirs, no shame in that and fairplay. I cant remember if was a p'ture stop or the lunch stop but he stopped and unfurled his rolled up saddle bag to reveal a wide range of individual tools that would have fitted anyone's bike

No - and that's a good thing. My multitools are an insurance policy, a get-you-home thing. I carry one for each bike or type of bike. If I have had to use all of the tools on it then something has gone badly wrong. I've never snapped a chain for example, so never needed to use the chain tool. On the MTB I run tubeless and so far the rare unsealable punctures have been dealt with by inserts, so the tyre levers are also unused. I have used a couple of the allen keys or the T25 to adjust or tighten stuff. But I will continue to carry one, just in case.

Ditto, but missed out on the ‘multi-tool’ step :+) It helps that the bike is an 80’s steel framed tourer!

I've taken multiple bikes in the car, a few times this year, which means taking off the saddles and front wheel. One one of my bikes, that needs allen keys.

Had one puncture in the last two years, that needed the tyre levers.

The chain breaker is better than my 40 yr old standalone one, so I've used that for two new chains this year.

Plus occasional tweaks to other people's bikes when out and about.

I never ride without a multitool. They're Grrrrrrreeat!
