Been using SH51's since I got my bike a few weeks back. My first go with SPD's and I rather like them.

Having had two 'moments' albeit not 'offs' I now have some SH56's.

Been and tried them on my mates turbo trainer and I really like them - a much more intuitive release action ie up and out. Will play around with the release tension once I get out on my bike properly.

Will maybe switch back to the SH51's as experience and confidence grows.

Anyone else use the multi-release cleats and how do you get on with them?

I use multi release cleats after a couple of falls but can't honestly say I notice much difference.

The only disadvantage to using multi-release cleats is that you are not able to apply an upward pull to the pedals, as used for serious climbing or racing. The advantage is that your foot will disengage in any direction, very useful when caught off balance! I use multi-release all the time.

But then what is the point of them?

Not being funny, but i cant get on with normal cleats, multi release may be an option for me, but i can not see any benefit.

The benefit is to keep your feet in position on the pedals! You use the ball of your foot for pressure instead of the instep, and you foot will not slip in the wet. Cleats are much more efficient than without, and few riders other than competitive ones will need the extra pull upward which the single release cleats offer.

Here you go:

A quick whizz around the block has confirmed my decision to go with them - much easier to get out of than the single release and more confidence inspiring to me.

Basically a quick pull upwards will release them - this is more intuitive imo in 'dodgy' moments.

I have tried a short sharp uphill in mine and to be perfectly frank not in a million years will my power output and speed up a hill pull them out by simply pedaling. An issue for very fit riders with legs like oak trees who may well release as they pull on the upstroke but for me that just isn't going to happen.

Imho these should be the default cleats for those new to clipless.

I have never heard of these until now. My SPD-SL's will release twisting either way. I found out the hard way that you probably don't want to be twisting your heel inwards toward the wheel to release. The shoe will hit the spokes, at least on a racing style bike it will.

I had been twisting inward with my other bike which has the crank moved a little more forward and it worked fine. I was lucky that I was going about as slow as possible when I tried on my drop bar bike. My first and only clipless moment to date. (knocks on wood)

Went for my first proper ride with these SH56 multi-release cleats today and all I can say is that they are a joy to use.

My observations:

My feet were perfectly secure on the pedals with no unplanned releases.

I tried but I cannot pull my feet off of the pedals when cycling properly ie trying to pull on the upstroke. I tried real hard and they did not release. I have pretty strong legs too; although not like a hardcore roadie!

It is way easier to get your feet off of the pedals and more importantly they easily release in what I would call the normal accidental release direction.

I tried a few releases as though I was about to have an 'incident' and they detached perfectly.

I would go so far as to say that I cannot see how you would have a 'clipless moment' with these cleats.

Recommended for those new to cleats and anyone who really doesn't want to have the not particularly funny sensation of watching your life slow-mo' as you suddenly realise that crap is happening and you cannot get your feet off your pedals.

Can't see myself ever going back to the SH51 single release cleats.
