Probably an easy answer!.

I currently have Continental Double fighter II tyres on my MTB. The size is 26*1.9 50-559. After another commute with 2 punctures I'm looking for different tyres with better puncture resistance!. Can anyone recommend a tyre and what sizes can fit on my wheel?. Wiggle have continental gatorskins at a size of 26*1.125. Will these fit on my wheel if I'm currently using 26*1.9. I'm guessing I would need new inners if this size does fit.

Thanks in advance.

Depends on what you plan on using the MTB for.

Road, tracks or full off-road.

Mainly road based, look at something thin with minimum tread like the 26 x 1.5 Schwalbe City Jets.

If you ride on gravel/canal paths light off road and want a fast tyre with some minimal off road usage then look at something like the Schwalbe Landcruiser.

For full off-road, play in the mud sillyness then pick any one of a range of wide, low pressure knobbly tyre - believe the Maxxis range get consistently good reviews, particularly the Minion and High-roller tyres.

Most middle width tyres should fit, down to 1.5. You may well need new tubes if you go that narrow.

Sorry, should have mentioned a few details. I commute into London (about 9miles each way) and will mainly be using it on tarmac. Got the slicker tyres so can do the journey in roughly 30 minutes. I just seem to get an amazing amount of punctures with the current tyres!!. Usually at least 5 per month. Today a pin got stuck in the tyre. Maybe I'm just unlucky.

In that case, definately recommend either

Schwalbe City Jets in 26x1.5 (which would be my choice)
Or for really bomb proof try Schwalbe Marathon +

Or if your tyres look ok and aren't worn too much, perhaps mr tuffy or Slime tyre liners would be more convenientcost effective? After a brace of p*nct*res on my newish front tyre, I put a tyre liner in (front and rear). No punctures since, but the bike is more sluggish due to the extra wheel weight. Some fairly indestructable tyres (M+?) weigh more than than the liner + tyre approach though, so it doesn't bother me anywhere near as much as a pu*t*re would.

I am hoping that when the tyres need replacing, the liners will be transferable, therefore making them far more economical. (Right bugger to fit, mind! But then I hear M+ are not exactly a cakewalk)

I have the M+ on my MTB and they were horrendous to fit. I ripped two tubes with pinch punctures just trying to get them on. Mind you once they are on they are bullet proof and you can get them on ebay for £40 a pair.

By coincidence I bought them to replace Double Fighter 2's and slime inserts and although the inserts are very good they are a real pain to fit properly. That said they are very effective as well.

I've been more than pleased with my Schwalbe Big Apples. Not a problem since I fitted them. Really easy to fit too, in fact almost too easy, I almost needed a third hand to stop them flopping back off the rim every time I got them in position.

Puncture free so far and they're very comfortable in use.

Another +1 for Schwalbe City Jets. Used to have them on the XC for commuting, excellent tyres, not too bad to fit.

jets come in 1.95 aswell which might suit you better op lot easier to fit than 1.50`s
id imagine , my rims usually take 2.11 tyres but thats big ol nobbly balloons ,
but jets are the mutts .

I use Continental City Contact semi-slick tyres with kevlar safety system 26x1.75 not had any problems with them and they roll very fast.

Mine also came with tubes, presta valves though, But I have a dual valve topeak mini g master blaster

Haven't been on for a while but I did buy the City jets 26*1.5. In my opinion, far better than the continentals that I had previously. Rolling resistance is great. Now commuting 11miles each way no problem. Had one puncture since I got them but the piece of glass that went through the tyre would have taken down a rhino!. Didn't find fitting the 1.5's a problem. Hope this helps.
