I had to put the coin in the pump machine if I remember correctly.
The machine took two-shilling pieces (my mum actually called them 'florins'). I tried to buy some for my hurricane lamp while we were camping earlier this year. They wanted £7.30 for a 5-litre container.

Delivery people used to carry stuff instead of putting it on a little electric tail lift.

You used to collect stuff from petrol stations: World cup football squad coins, Football Club crest things, that would go onto a display card.
Glasses (still got some in the cupboard).
I am sure there were stickers with bullet holes that you stuck over your car (cant remember why) and a tiger's tail made of fake fur.

Before plastic bags my mum would go to Fine Fair with a big shopping bag and then struggle along the road with it bulging with food. This happened most days.

Only frozen food was a bag of peas in the frozen compartment of the fridge that used to get iced up solid and a packet of fish fingers if we were lucky.

Renting TVs

Cross ply tyres. (why did you have the option to buy tyres that did not grip the road or ones that did?).

How come the bin men want you to gift-wrap your own rubbish AND put your bin in a convenient spot for them? Some of them want you to put tins here, bottles over there, paper here, garden stuff there and you can be fined and maybe sent to prison if you aren't doing half their job for them! It's crept up on us like a rapist and we've all fallen for it.

Being able to buy alcohol on a Sunday

The pub shutting at 2pm and re-opening at 5.30pm.
(The Tin Pan Alley club used to fill in the gaps for thirsty Londoners )

Night Train

Maker of Things
Having an indoor toilet and a bath tub that didn't hang on the wall over the fire and had to be filled with a kettle.

When £1 notes got smaller and looked like toy money.

Black plimsolls being replaced by white trainers for school PE classes.

Some dim and distant synapse has just been triggered in my brain...does anyone remember the (early 80s?) petrol station promo thing called "Don't be a Dinosaur"? I haven't the faintest idea what it was about - all I can remember were the iron-on transfers with a silhouette of a T-Rex in a 'no entry'-type road sign. ;)
