Most expensive sport?

Was clocking up how much I've spent over the last few years of cycling...it's pretty scary (although I've had the best times and can't even begin to explain how cycling has changed my life!!).
I've not even tried to go through the costs with the wife but she's mentioned (at least a few times) that at least cycling is a cheap sport..once you've bought the bike, that's all there is!!! (I haven't shared our credit card bills for some time!!!)
So was wondering how cycling stacks up against other sports in terms of cost...
Once upon a time I played basketball...just needed trainers and a ball!

Formula One, jet car racing (use £100 of fuel just to do a 1/4 mile) and rallying are a bit pricier than cycling.

It depends. You can run in bare feet but you are more likely to spend $200 on some nice Mizuni and change them every year then you need the totally unnecessary vest, hat, sweat band, ipod etc etc recovery drink, gels and so on. Cycling is the same, not that you can ride in bare feet but you know what I mean. I think it is quite possible to play a round of golf with a 9 iron and a putter but if you are like a friend of mine you will get the full set of Ping in a bag on wheels, shoes with spikes and the Tiger Woods outfit pay your club fees and bar fees and then learn how to play. Photography is the same (ask me how I know) but I think my point is clear.

When you start racing things get really fun. £10 a week for a crit, £4 for time trials. Track coaching sessions once a week £5. That is £19 a week more or less every week. Add a big road race at the weekend and this can be an additional £20 (-£4 from cutting the TT out). Nightmare on a student loan

cycling can be very cheap indeed, but also extremely expensive - the joy of cycling it that the rider decides how much to spend ranging from almost nothing (assuming you have a bike) to many thousands if you want the latest kit and clothing.

not even nearly possible on a student loan - you must have an additional income, as the loan doesn't even cover basic living expenses such as rent and food!

I wouldn't like to be taking up darts - look at the all the gold jewelery you appear to need. darts1_789441c.jpg

And that's before you factor in a few gallons of beer.

I used to rock climb - cheap on the face of it but the training at climbing walls adds up and all the travel too.
Then took up skiing - budget went up further still.
So I tried motorsport.

shoot, I don't think I'm doing it right.

I used to swim- training costs and membership, goggles, hats, costumes that only lasted 1 month, race suits (£80 odd every 6mo), entry fees for events, training fins, pull buoy, kick board, enough shampoo and conditioner to single handedly keep Tesco happy...

But then, that was the bank of Daddy, and I'm funding my cycling myself. Why does Wiggle save my credit card details and make it so easy to spend?! Yes, I do need new shorts (but maybe didn't need the matching jersey)
