I was driving back from Oxford today when I came across a group ride, on the extremely busy road from Oxford to Reading. They were rider in a group, up to three abreast.

Of course I tucked in behind them, and waited for a safe opportunity to pass. When I did, I gave them a nice wide birth, and put my foot down, to get past them as quickly as safely as possible, and allow other cars to follow behind me.

Imagine how mortified I was when I saw a cloud of smoke from my exhaust engulf them! I can only assume that it was the dpf or something, letting go of collected soot, I had been driving gently I guess. Have to watch out for that in the future!

Sh#t happens, nothing you could do about it, you could have been the car in a supported ride and the dpf decides it is time to regenerate, it is out of your control...cest la vie

Used to be able to do this deliberately when we had a 1986 Land Rover 90 with a naturally-aspirated diesel engine; if somebody was trying to climb in the back door you could floor the clutch and the throttle simultaneously then watch in the mirror as a huge cloud of greasy black fumes poured out and they pulled back in horror. It also had MOD lighting with a "convoy" setting, which disabled all the electrics except for a tiny light that shone on the rear differential. Many was the time I was tempted to turn off the brake lights then hit the brakes but that would have been a bit silly.

Now we can rationalise cars revving away behind us while waiting for a safe moment to pass. They are not demonstrating lack of clutch control or impatience, but seeking, very thoughtfully, to avoid dumping particulates on the cyclists when they eventually shoot safely past.

Bugger it. Think it was perhaps not the dpf! Car whistling away like billy oh today! Turbo may be on it's way out! And yes, I'd love to get on my bike instead, but can't quite fit my two kids on it!

There's a dirty scrapage scheme escaping derv around my way that hasn't seen a sponge or a service in quite a while, that has 'choking cyclists since 2001'* proudly displayed in large graphics across his back window.

*Not sure if that's the exact year on it but you get the drift.

Diesels dump a lot of black soot out on acceleration anyway. The diesel engine isn't very efficient in terms of how much fuel it actually burns. A lot is wasted, and comes out the exhaust in a black cloud under heavy acceleration. Modern diesels are much better in this respect, but even still watch any diesel under heavy acceleration you will get a soot cloud.

The best thing you can do, is ditch the devil fuel and buy a petrol

Ideally it would be a Tesla! Great for safe passing, and no emissions. Finances don't quite permit at the moment though!

And a huge tax burden when the new rules come in!

Silly rules, fully electric tesla will cost more with VED than a petrol, or diesel car. Massive step back

Then they don't pay for fuel. And no one who can afford a Tesla will be put off by 450/year

They still pay for the electric required to charge the thing. Although people who can afford a Tesla can likely afford the yearly VED. Do we really want to promote a system that may push people back towards fossil fuel vehicles, after so much progress towards trying to develop cleaner infrastructure?
