what are most people averaging per month or what is a good mileage to aim for, i started riding inc commuting in march this year.
so far since i started to log my milage i have done:

133 miles in june
189 miles in july
71 miles in august (school holidays lol)
179 miles so far this month.

i try to do it at a good pace as i want to do sportives next year or maybe join a club and race, my best time for 46 miles is 2hrs 12 ins and done
36 miles last sunday in 1hr 42 mins and was hillier.
if i am looking to race or do sportives next year should i be looking to do better times or much more mileage.
sorry if its a stupid question

you're averaging 21 mph on reasonably long rides on the back of pretty low training milages.

you need to be calling David Brailsford.

So i wouldn't have any worries about Sportives. You'll be towards the front of the ride i'd suggest.

Set myself a target of 300 miles per month albeit at a much slower pace than yours, and am a little ahead of schedule, should reach my target as long as we don't get any silly weather before Xmas.

I've been averaging just under 300 miles per month for the last 2 1/2 yrs. All on three wheels. If you discount the lost time in last winter and some illness it would be nearer 400.

I planned 3600 miles ie: 300 per month a fellow member suggested the 10 mile per day instead so I did that, extra 50 miles shouldn't be too hard

Have a look here and you can see a good many Cycle Chatters mileage totals.
And of course you are more then welcome to log your rides/mileage also as part of Team Cycle Chat.
My average monthly mileage is between 800-1000 miles. My 2010 target is 10,000 miles.

How is the knee Garz?

It can walk up stairs now but I'm reluctant to ride on it as it can be sore and occasionally feels weak. I need to get a ride in though and I'm meant to be doing a sportive this sunday!

Last year my main target was London Edinburgh London, but after that, I saw that 10,000 miles for the year was possible, and just managed it, with daily commuting and the odd Audax. This year my only target was the completion of the Mille Cymru 1000km which I managed. I don't think 10,000 miles is going to be possible so I'm aiming for a 1mph average - ie 24 miles per day, 8760 for the year.I tend to average something around 12mph - speed is not my forte. But in my defence I'm averaging around 475m of climbing every day so far.

They seem to be highly impressive average speeds, espeshially as you're doing relatively few miles and you haven't mentioned any training plans.

Things will obviously vary from rider to rider but I think most cat3-4 races will either be doing about 1,000miles a month or they'll be following a some sort of structured training plan (quality not quantity). Then again most cat 4 riders wouldn't be able to average 21mph over 50miles!

Sportives arn't races, although a lot of the riders to tend to push a little bit harder than normal because they're being timed and they want to gain a 'gold/silver' standard. Apparently to do well on a sportive you need to be used to spending 3-4 hours in the hills or going out and riding for 100mile at a time. If your longest ride is just 46 flat miles then you might suffer somewhat towards the end of a hilly 100mile ride. - It sounds as though you should do well on the shorter flatter routes though.

To do well racing you need to be used to sprinting hard out of bends and recovering quickly having just torn yourself apart. If you're not passing people then you will be slowing drifting towards the back of the peleton and your race will soon be over.

I guess mine would be around 150 miles a month for commuting plus any training rides on weekends. So maybe 200-230 a month. The issue is I work shifts and don't always cycle.
