Cheers for the info everyone. I do understand the costs - I was budgeting about £700 for the complete bike.

However, a bit of a spanner has been thrown in the works. Well, several spanners in fact.

1. The LBS I was planning on getting this made at as a complete bike has decided they won't be joining the cyclescheme after all.
2. Bank loans these days are horribly expensive, despite interest rates being super low and my credit rating being AAA.
3. At the same time as I discovered the above, I discovered the banks new plans for overdraft charging so I now have to get out of the cycle of being overdrawn at the end of each month.
4. My employer may be continuing it's pay freeze.

I think I have to face the fact I'm not going to be able to afford it for a while

I think I may have to join the revolution and march on the banks that are frankly to blame for all of the above. The CFO of Lloyds TSB will be hanging from a lampost by a bicycle chain afore the sun sets tonight!

But anyway, thanks for all the info everyone. At some point when things improve it's lifetime investment custom Mercian frame time!

Try LA Cycles in Coventry. Lee Cooper.

They'll build you what you want.

I got my hands on a bent Peugeot 531 just like my precious, but massive. I took it to Lee Cooper and they would re-use the dropouts, lugs and shell to build a tiny small frame ( 52cm ) in 531 for a groupo transplant.

£500. INCLUDING chroming.

I didn't proceed with that project. They talked themselves out of a job by telling me what I already had was good enough for my needs.

Fair do's.

'Tis a shame. Perhaps just buy bits and bobs to save up when you see them cheap? Thats what I've been doing with the Kinesis. I also saved up a budget of 1800 quid to get it done how I want it. Sometimes you just have to do it little and often.

I've seen the Surlys go cheap on ebay a few times, as with other good steelies.. I suppose you'd need to do a full check over before you commit to buying though!
