Hi, can anyone direct me to the websites of UK manufacturers of steel frames? Particularly after nice classic-style lugged frames - although affordability is a bonus which sadly rules Mercian out!

(I only got one number on the lottery last night so I think it'll be a while before I can own a nice red and white 831 Vincitoire Special!)

Basically I'm after a steel/alloy horizontal-dropout equipped frame to build a classic-esque 3-speed SA hub geared commuting speedster! I do love the look of the curly-ended lugged steel frames, but think I'd be better off buying new than entering the ebay minefield, so would like to see whats out there, and that might be affordable - would rather not spend more than £200-300 on the frame max.

Thanks!

A Brian Rourke frame may suit what you want. Not cheap but I've seen a few going on ebay.

With prices starting at £650 (same as Mercian) I think a handbuilt steel frame will be out of my league!

Any there any mass-manufactured lugged steel frame makers out there?

How about regular steel track frames? The Cotic Road Rat is one I've looked at, but wasn't keen on the compact geometry. Any more?

three options:-

On-One Pompetamine for disc brakes and Pompino without - £165 for frame and £35 for forks - but no derailler hangers, you can get dropout attaching ones but cable routing would be via zip tie

Surly Crosscheck, F&F about £350 - can run anything but disc brakes(which is a shame) but more elegant than the On-One frames(I have one) but gives you options to run big tyres, racks, guards etc - traditional geometry

Surly Karate Monkey, F&F about £350 - this is 29er MTB territory, can take mahhosive tyres and do everything the Xcheck does plus disc brakes - but long effective top tubes to tricky to set up with drop bars, very sloping geometry

Thanks MacB - had a look on On-One's site - wasn't sure about the Pompino - looks a bit oversized tubing-compact geometry for me, HOWEVER if I hadn't looked there I wouldn't have found the Lincolnshire Poacher frame which looks rather good indeed! Shame I really don't like the name 'On One' and their logo - all a little too 1990s Mountain Biking rather than 1950s road cycling! How much is powder coating? ;)

Surly crosscheck is good but I don't think I can stick a 3-speed hub on vertical dropouts, especially if I go coaster brake. Needs to be horizontal.

Disc brakes are staying on my Kona I'm afraid. I'm increasingly erring towards rim on the front and coaster on the back ... maybe just coaster on the back! They are a lot of fun

What about the Cooper T200 reims - £895. 5sp hub gears classic steel lugged frame. Nice looking bike.

It is a very nice bike indeed. However:

1. Only want 3 speed (5 speed SA hubs are apparently not terribly efficient)
2. Not coaster brakes
3. Not keen on the handlebar/brake arrangement

but most importantly:

4. A friend got one and I was cooing over it and she had made it very clear it is hers and I am not to get one!
