I would be very interested to get the opinion of the CC women on this one. Mrs BG was saying that the Miranda character panders to men's stereotypes of stupid women which is why she's so popular? I'm genuinely puzzled. Maybe its cos I'm getting on a bit but I just think she's funny in an old fashioned Tony Hancock, Eric and Ernie type of way.

I think she's deeply unfunny. All a bit too slapstick for me.

edit - I'm a laydee slug, BTW

Well...

I like it. I dunno what it is I like about it, I just do... And I'm not a great fan of slapstick - those bits are my least favourite, although at the same time, I appreciate that she does them well.

Partly, I think, I like the fact that she (the actress) has made it despite not being conventionally pretty, and overcoming being so tall.

I like her asides to camera.

And also, I have to admit, I like Gary the chef....

(And I'm a girl, in case that needed saying.... ;))

and overcoming being so tall.

Is tallness something to be overcome?

I think she's awful, I only watched half an episode before turning off. I'm a big fan of comedy and it really annoys me when female comics feel they have to produce this sort of dumbed down self-deprecating crap in order to be funny. Sarah Milligan is another prime example! Rant over!

Hi-five Mrs BG! :hello:

P.S. I think I find her especially annoying as I think her turning her height into a joke sends out a really bad message.

Well, at 5' 3" I can't say from experience, but from what I understand, being above average height can be a burden for a woman - perhaps if you're a supermodel shape, that's fine, but to be generally in proportion and so tall can make you the subject of jibes, and since you stand out, you have to cope with the attention. Indeed, I think plenty of men find being above average height can be a drag, just as being very short might be.

Why is self deprecation crap if it's by a woman? Would you be ok with a self deprecating male comedian?

Maybe I'm just thick, but I don't see it as dumbed down. It's comedy, and comedy generally has a butt. Sometimes the butt is someone other than the lead, sometimes it's the lead - either self deprecatingly, or not (I'm thinking someone like the character of Hancock, who was a buffoon, but thought himself very important and clever). Not everyone enjoys everything, of course, but dumbed down doesn't seem like the right term.

Although I'm a bloke, I would still like to comment (If thats ok ladies )

I think she is funny, but I do agree with you. Some of her gags are cringe-worthy, a bit like Mr Bean. In fact, thats the worst part of it.

She (The actress) is a very witty woman and doesnt care what other people think of her. I think thats what I like about her.

Did anyone see last years christmas programme hosted by her? It was like a catch-up clip show of the year. She *properly* took the piss out of Nigella!

Miranda?

(potters over to Google to suss out which Miranda they're on about)

I should explain that, to me, this is Miranda:

And yesssss! Phwoarrrrrr!!! She's beeeeauuuutiful! Don't you all agree?

Being tall is a complete pain in the arse - I'm 6 foot (give or take a cm) and have been since I was in my early teens. It was the source of much bullying (and terrible trousers until the high street woke up and started making a 36 inseem for girls!). I just don't think that her making a joke out of her unconventional appearance does anything other than point out that it is abnormal to be a very tall women (supermodel shaped or not). I think it would be a lot more admirable if she just got on with some decent comedy and said nothing about her physical appearance. Maybe the rest of the series was a bit better than the 15 mins I watched but I've seen her in interviews and was equally unimpressed.

I think self deprecation can be funny but there just seems to be huge abundance of it among some of the female comedians on tv at the moment. I just don't think it's that funny to point out that you're a bit fat and like cake - get out on a bike and think up some decent material! I'm hardly a feminist but I think us girls can do a bit better than that!

I think she sends out a very positive message. A woman, unorthodox, not a bimbo, not relying on anything but her talent, simply getting on with it.
I think she is funny, intelligent and a good role model. Her character in the show is fictional, her talent for writing is real.
Chap here by the way!

I'm not a fan at all. My old housemate (also a woman) and I couldn't sit through one episode. The humour is not funny at all, it seems all a bit twee and annoying and we both found the asides to camera very irritating.

It just seemed like the character was twee in a foppy, daft kind of way and I don't think there is anything empowering about her, just irritating!
