The thing that worries us about the London Surrey is the strict 8 and a half hour time limit. We won't get an early start time, those being reserved for the speed merchants, but it would be good not to be in the last wave either. Happy medium hoped for!

I think you need to maintain an average speed of 11.7mph for ride London. And as there are no speed traffic lights or other cars I imagine the flat bits will be extremely quick even for me so will counter act the slow climbing bits. And I think if you are really slow they will stop you doing a couple of sections namely Leith Hill. I averaged 13.6 mph today so I am more confident than ever that I will be safe from being swept up!

Yes but that assumes you don't stop anywhere. Did you have breaks on your 50?

I am determined to finish it having had to pull out due to injury (overtraining while trying to come back from post accident surgery) last year, so no sweeping allowed!!

The closes roads will of course help, mechanicals a nightmare as we are clueless. I've bought CO2 though!

Good on you mate. Any cycling is an achievement. As long as you enjoy what your doing and having a good time keep doing it. I started 42 years ago with my dad saying "Don't go beyond the two lamposts son" which were 20 yards apart. Then as a teenager I said "56 miles too Brighton piece of cake" I nearly died ....one of the worst days of my life. I came back to Ditchling 4 times before I made it without getting off the bike and walking. Then I did sportives and Evans king of the downs including the Puncher in Wales and Dragon Ride later in life. Recently had cancer 12+ chemo and two bone marrow transplants, and started cyling again.

I am either stupid or a glutton for punishment, or just don't know when to quit. It's all in the mind. :ninja:

Congratulations. Am also doing Ride London and will be taking in the three climbs next weekend - Newlands, Leith Hill, Box Hill, time permitting. Done Leith Hill and Box Hill together and done Shere and Leith Hill but not three climbs one after the other, so that'll be fun. Will also do the wee climb up to the Muddy Duck as a warm up ^_^

Speed wise, I made a decision to try and stick above 15mph as much as possible to raise my average and it seems to be working. Did a 33 miler (including the Weybridge to West Horsley segment of RL) yesterday at average 16mph which was a pleasant surprise. If I can manage that on the day then, hopefully, there should be enough redundancy embedded to cater for punctures, hills, and stops...did I mention hills?
