The full version (with all bells and whistles) of MS Office 2007 cost me about £17 delivered direct from Microsoft as my company participates in the HUP (Home user program), you should check if your employer does, too.
Open Office is not quite as good as Microsoft Office IMO. Also, software applications that use Excel won't work with other spreadsheets. Some of Microsoft's offers aren't bad. You can also download free versions of Visual Basic and C#.
I can get the full enterprise edition of MS Office through the Home User Programme as the NHS has rather a lot of regular licenses. Free; just pay the delivery charges.
