Of course there's another approach - ride distinctive bikes and make sure everyone knows who you are if you live in a small place. I've been quite surprised how many people seeing me on my new single speed (black glittery frame, red wheels and handlebar tape) have asked where my mtb (stripped down Merlin with a red saddle) is or why they haven't seen me out on the WIndcheetah for a while.

Won't work if professional bike thieves come to town but it does suggest that being known locally does help with the local scallies :hello:
