Hi all, hope this question is in correct section (first thread). Thinking of buying a 12_29 Miche cassette, previous cassettes been Shimano or SRAM will it match up for shifting etc. Does any one know about loose cog/spider set up. Thanks

I've got a Miche 13-28, 9 speed cassette here in front of me, all loose cogs. Used with a Tiagra set up. No problems, can't recall even having to tweak the indexing.

I have a 11-28 Primato with a Shimano set up and as above all loose rings but goes straight on and no problems even with the shifting

Thanks, replies are positive, like the idea of loose cogs( I remember when it was the norm to have loose cogs). Means I can remove 12,have top 13 and if I can find one add a 32 or so.

Nice idea, but the top cogs are knurled to mate with the lock-ring, so you can't simply take off the 12T and use the next cog up, you would have to find a 13T top cog to relace the 11.

Lockrings for 12t work with 13t cassettes. However most have serrations which maybe aren't necessary but can make them brand specific. So serrated ones need to match but a non-serrated lockring will work for any brand: look for one of those to clamp your 13-32 cassette (assume your RD can cope). May need to adjust the B-Tension Adjusting screw to cope with the larger (13t) top sprocket.

Serrations - that's the word I was looking for. The Miche lockring and first sprocket are serrated. at least on the cassette I have.

Hi ,thanks for your comments.
Basically I have a new bike for my recent big birthday. Chainset 48/36/26 and cassette 11_34 and just don't need 11 or 12 cog. Ideally would like 13_32 but content with 13_30 or 34. The alternative to Miche method is remove 11 and 12 they are loose, find a suitable roadie's 12 or 13 to 20 odd cassette use 13 and 14 cogs so I will have 13,14,15,17,20 ,23,26,30,34. Will I have locking problems?

You can't use the 11t lockring so make sure you get a 12t lockring from the 'roadie' (sic) cassette as well. Normally these specify 40Nm torque. Without the benefit of serrations on the outer sprocket (13t) I'd be inclined to cinch it firm. The lockring is just holding the cassette on: it's not taking a rotational load. Keep an eye on its tightness after each use, till you're confident.
As above:

Thanks to all, am inclined to buy Shimano hg 50 13_25 . Will remove my present 11 and 12 and replace with 13 end cog with built-in spacer and the 14.
