As a fellow human being I wish him well and hope he makes a good recovery.

I still don't think it justifies being the news lead item.
It's an easy story for rolling news, plenty of archive footage, loads of people to stick in front of a camera and a nice convenient hodpital to stand outside. On the other hand, the bombings in Russia require explanation, there is little footage, and there is nobody remotely famous to express a view.

As to helmets the neurosurgeon who operated on him said that had he not been wearing one it was most unlikely he would have made it to the operating theatre. Of course there will be people on here saying that the good professor is talking nonsense - after all the guy is only a neurosurgeon with a first hand look at the patient and his injuries, whereas they have a settee they are sitting on and a point of view..

That is true but then Russia, bombs, have been the background to our lives and are the stuff of Politics and Current Affairs where heavy stuff happens all the time. If you want to discuss endlessly and all too often pointlessly these matters, that is the place.

OTOH the world of motor sport is lighter stuff with less deadly heroes and villains more appropriate for cafe talk. When one of its iconic figures from the past - the man many of us loved to hate for years - has been struck down, ironically so long after retirement from the dangerous sport it was in his day, why dismiss it so casually?

It was only the news lead item on the BBC for an hour or two. Now the bombings in Russia have that spot. On CC they have not figured in
Current Affairs and Debates at all!

Who, me ?
I spent (and enjoyed) 5 minutes with MS watching his son karting back in the summer. I was never a fan of his ruthlessness on the circuit but did admire his speed.

Best wishes to him for a full recovery!

Who, me ?
I have a ski helmet - it's a little thicker than my cycling helmet but not as substantial and my motorbike helmet.

I once stuck my gps in my pocket whilst ski-ing to see what top speed I could hit. Had to bust a gut to ski my age (40, at the time).

I agree, Senna's helmet didn't do him much good either, but then again it wasnt tested to withstand the impact from broken front suspension.
Hope MS makes a recovery like James Cracknel and Richard Hammond

Richard Hammond had nothing to damage.....
