hiya , I am looking at buying a CX , I like the Merida 300-500 's , I spoke to Merida , this is the reply I got,
Does what was said make sense , as in a road bike with CX tyres ,
I sm not looking at CX racing , but a bike with high end rosd bike speeds , and playing around with the cassete , lower chain ring , the versatility of a CX , any way here is reply

Good to chat to you this morning.

The below link will take you to our UK website, where you can find your nearest dealer, loads of dealers in your neck of the woods. As mentioned limited stock currently left on the Cyclo cross 300 but have a look at the Ride Disc range, similar frame, disc brake and will also take a 33c cyclo cross tyre.

Why do you want a road bike with CX tyres if speed is your aim? What's wrong with a road bike?
What's the use for the bike? Commuting look at the London road?

I'm not sure what you were asking them? Merida make decent CX style bikes, so do others but they might call them a gravel or adventure bike nowadays. Kind of depends which brands you like? Fwiw I'd go to sigma and discuss a Kinesis cross light build

You can take a road bike on tow paths and tracks, provided you've a decent set of tires and it's not stupidly rough.

But if you want a CX then go for it. Merida make some crackers and the Ride Disc reviews I've seen have been favourable, though I've no direct experience.

The only confusion is that I was led to believe that road bikes only take road tyres , now Merida say the their Road Disc range take these CX tyres ,

Depends entirely on clearances. I could get CX tyres onto my Kona Honky Tonk but not a chance on my Bianchi B4P.

That's because without calipers, the clearance is easier for the wider CX tyres.

In between here and there
I ride towpaths and gravel on a Supersix with 23mm tyres. Given the choice between a CX bike and a Sportive bike like the Ride I would pick the Ride Disc. The latter if my memory is right has discreet mudguard mounts and could take a 30mm tyre.

Or if you really are looking at doing a fair bit off road one of the newish Gravel type bikes, I have a GT for winter and its great
