A clean boiler suit is effective for keeping you warm, a quilted boiler suit even more so. They have lots of pockets, which are handy, also when someone comes to the door it gives the impression that you are a bit of an action man and not an idle layabout that you would surely be mistaken for if you appeared at the door in a dressing gown.

So people will spend money on a thick dressing gown rather than a few quid extra on gas, which benefits everyone in the house?

Isn't not running the heating at all bad for the house? Honest question - I'm thinking damp/mould etc. and at worst - frozen pipes.

We have a small spare bedroom that we rarely use, so I shut the radiator off. Within a few days, the corners of the room were going damp (from condensation) and they eventually turned mouldy. I ended up putting the radiator back on...

One of these should keep you warm:

Now that, I do like. Plus I can come to the door looking slightly strange ... which will scare away the carol singers!

I like to keep the central heating on (of course), but just at a lower level than some would have it! I don't mind 16-17 degrees so long as I have layers on. You'd be amazed at the difference in the amount of fuel used (and the cost) between 16 degrees and 21 degrees!

On Friday evening I put another 170mm of glass wool into the attic about the 150mm already there. For the last three nights it's been so warm upstairs that I've gone to sleep with the duvet off me and still feeling too warm. Cost of that exercise? £60. We should recoup that in a year.

It amazes me how many people put it off and put it off! XmrsIS still has single glazed windows - and her flat is like an ice box! I spent a few notes on double-insulating my loft, getting cavity wall insulation done and renewing all the double glazing on my house - and it retains the heat with only a few occasional blasts to be heard from the boiler as the thermostat tells it that the place is getting too cold.

I don't like putting my heating up too high; I don't see the point in sitting there in winter in a t-shirt with the heating cranked up to the max!

Anyway, I have taken to wearing a dressing gown over my clothes around the house in winter, but what I would really love would be a proper old-fashioned Victorian style quilted men's housecoat.

Does anyone wear one or know where I could get one?

I believe there is a newfangled invention called a jumper.

Theres's quite a lot of those old fashioned extra long dressing gowns available in charity shops and jumble sales . You'll be amazed at how heavy and warm they are. You'll get used to the smell of urine......
