And once again I have to quote Catrike's extremely acute words:

There is a reason why cyclists like lycra, because it is marvelous stuff for cycling in, the benefits soon outweigh the self image issues and the more you cycle in it, the better you think you look.

There's one thing worse than a cyclist wearing lycra shorts. It's a cyclist wearing lycra shorts on THIN legs. - with the patch hanging like a full nappy ;)

I got into cycling at a young age, my dad always cycled, my mates cycle, I ride in a club, I used to work in a bike shop so I've never really thought twice about lycra wearing. Then I started work at a place where only a few people commute in lycra. I didn't really think twice about strolling to the changing rooms in cleats and lycra but for a while I was certainly the office curiosity!

Wear full lycra? You must be bloody joking. That stuff's so tight it gives away my religion.

Not got to the full lycra phase yet, but left my trousers on my desk while getting changed and walked through the office with Bib Shorts and slippers on a few months back and the camera phones were out and my pics were on Facebook and various other internet sites within about 90seconds!

I stuck them as my profile picture on most things, few "big daddy" comments but thats gone now pretty much.

Embrace the tightness, its your friend!

Bikers over 60 should not wear lycra,
i wear Ron Hills Bikester as my longs, my mate who is also 60 wears tight lycra bibs,
which i think looks stupid,
I know you have to be seen, but why make yourself look like a Xmas tree,
Even my road Bike is Black.

The older I get, the faster I used to be ...
Bikers over 60 should not wear lycra - bit dogmatic isn't it? What do you wear as shorts? khaki baggies? What is it that happens to us when the clock ticks over from 59 to 60 that prompts this opinion?

Whatever you do don't ride on your Birthday as you may have to change half way through the ride

Was riding the other weekend and saw a couple of 'older' roadies having a chillout on the side of the road. Both were 65 if a day and both in full lycra... both looked better than I would at half their age if I donned a full get up (still saving for the Jelly Belly jersey).

I did pull over round the corner and have a bit of a cry.

Didn't know you were Jewish, Maz! ;)

Oh well, no skin off my nose if you are!

I enjoy wearing lycra as it's practical and comfortable, and like most of you fellas out there, you always get a second look from the ladies! :becool:

I wouldn't really feel comfortable in lycra shorts/pants etc. So I either wear my jeans or a normal pair of shorts (sports shorts) depending on the weather and a shirt and a jacket or long sleeved shirt if it's cold.

I do wear a cycling shirt sometimes though: I quite like the red white and black Crane one I bought recently (I like red)! I don't like to draw too much attention to myself: however, I don't avoid brightly coloured clothes within reason, but I won't wear anything green for cycling or otherwise: it's an awful colour IMO!

A few years ago at college, there was this student of I'd say at least mid 50's who always wore Lycra clothing on his bike, and didn't get changed, so did the lessons dressed in Lycra! He was overweight too. Because he used his car most of the time and the bike for very short journeys (what's the point in buying proper cycling gear if you're not going to cycle much? Bit of a waste of money). My sister saw him and thought it was "sick" and pointed out that he wasn't well endowed to say the least!;)

I too never fancied wearing lycra being 54 and thought it would look stupid so prefered Ron Hills, but I took the plunge and it was the best thing I ever did. It somehow swelled my confidence cycling and now when I hear a car behind I have a tendency to peddle faster, I like to think there's a bird behind admiring my physique and by going faster I stay in front a bit longer prolonging her view. Gods knows what they think when they get in front and see its an old perve.

In reality though do not be put off by what others might think, just get out and do it. The biggest majority of the people who see you out on the roads when you get away from home do not know you so it does not matter, wear a peaked cap and sunglasses and just dip your head and hide behind the peak.

One top tip though with tights, always make sure your seams are straight, I went out last weekend and no matter what I could not get the seam on my left leg to match my right no matter how many times I put my left leg in, a problem I have never encountered before. After 20 miles I started to get very sore between my legs and by time I got home after 50 I was in real agony. It turned out that my left leg was back to front making it twist a bit between my legs. Lesson well learrned.
