I've got Promax cable pull discs. They seem to work very well, can easily lock the rear. Not pulled hard enough to lock the front, but have pulled hard enough for the front shocks to dip quite a bit.

I currently have Tektro Lyras (as mentioned above) on one of my cx bike and no amount of adjusting will sort it. I've cleaned discs, pads and adjusted the calipers and re lubed the cables. Even in the wet I would prefer my 105 brakes on the road bike.

My Decathlon Rockrider mountain bike was supplied with Tektro cable pull disc brakes. Used with a normal sort of lever pressure, they stop the bike very efficiently, but are not so powerful as to lock up the wheels. But if you really grab a handful of brake lever, you will be flying through the air in the blink of an eye.....

They are a bit fiddly to set up, so that the pads are not rubbing the discs but are as close to the discs as possible, but once you get them set correctly they are very good. There is plenty of info on Youtube and the internet on setting up cable discs.

I've had mechanical discs before and never had the hassle as I do now, so I know that not all are equal. The closest I've come to having "ok" stopping power is the business card on the adjustable pad side of the disc setup. Wind it tight then wind it back a quarter turn, this is the closest it needs to be without rubbing.
