Bitumen is a waste product derived from cat cracking of crude oil

MDPE is widely used in the gas and water distribution industries. When laid in the ground it should always have some sort of non-bituminous fine fill around it, but I'd bet a large amount of money that there's many a buried pipe in contact with asphalt. I've never heard of a pipe that's suffered degradation as a result.
its the hi viz blue stuff, and I am running it along the bottom of a fence and it looks awful, painted matt black it will sort of disappear and the only black paint I have kicking about is bitumen. (too mean to buy new paint)
Gotcha! Usually use the black pipe for above ground work. Have you considered frost protection?

It's medium density polyethylene. It's only blue 'cos it's dyed. PE is colourless - your supermarket milk container is also PE. Blue for water, yellow for gas. We design landfill liners with high density PE - which has very nearly the same chemical resistance as MDPE to most things. You'll be OK to paint it with almost anything! PE is pretty unreactive - which is why most of the world uses it for chemical lagoons, landfills, contaminated land remediation, etc.

Reiver, you could always cover or wrap the pipe with something to hide it... saves painting it?

Looks OK! My M-in-L put in a similar pipe fed off a water butt.... as long as the head of water in the butt is high enough it works really well. She adapted it by drilling holes in it to irrigate a narrow raised planting bed so she didn't have to water it in the summer. The holes tend to block up as the pressure is low but as a drip feed it's fine- she disguised it by wrapping it in an open weave filter bed material.

[That's an incredibly tidy lawn [ours is mostly moss and daisies] and fence!!]
