If the bike knackers out, hitch it. Just don't sacrifice sex time for travel time - you'll regret not having that extra half a day here and there. So... go for it, get some, break it off, come back, find a local lass less than 30 minutes ride away.

1. you will be alone and bored
2. the weather could be an absolute nightmare
3. If you had a tough time getting there think about how much you are not going to enjoy the cycle home.
4. you will need to carry everything...clothes, spares, tent, etc etc
5. Saying the old mountainbike in the shed implies that its fairly unloved and would quite possibly let you down at exactly the wrong minute
6. what happens if your stuck in the middle of no-where and something totaly screwed up happens to your bike
7 are you sure you know enough about bike repair/maintenance
8. are you friggin crazy???

welcome to th eworld of a cycle tourer.

With a bit of planning and searching ahead for cheap fares, you'll get to a train from Paignton to Harwich in 6.5 hours on the train for £41 quid. Bikes are normally free if you book in advance on mainline trains. Ferry to the Hook, then a shortish cycle and you're there.

Abandon the shed bike, and fly home to Exeter.

I've done some real things in my time but even I wouldnt try this one; in light of your circumstances.

Something else will come up and put this in the shade.

If you weigh up the costs of what you will spend in bits and pieces riding there I reckon you'd be better off driving or flying.

If you are not used to riding long distances, it will take it's toll on you.

Saddle sore takes about 10 days to get over!

I Googled cheap flights to Amsterdam, they start from £70

If you cycled you'd need at least two nights accomodation each way. 4 nights B&B cant be much cheaper than £70 not to mention your food.

Long distance relationships are not easy but they do work. I live just outside London and my G/F was in Sunderland. Now she lives with me and we are getting married.

Good luck, let us know how you get on.

It would be cheaper and easier to find a girlfriend in Paignton.

I'm in Torquay for a week (like the rest of the West Midlands it seems) and went to Paignton this morning.

Move to Holland immediately.
