Anyway, they're easy (if a bit messy) to make fresh. Mash some spuds, mix with cheese and a beaten egg. Roll them into small sausage shapes. Dip these in beaten egg, then breadcrumbs. Shallow fry until golden. Delicious.
I only remember it as spreadable stuff in a condom. I used to have it in sandwiches at school for my packed lunch in the 60's and 70's with tomato and black pepper. Yum yum! (or Pan Yan)
You can definitely still buy Mattesons smoked sausages. They come in a plastic bag, I had one about six months ago, quite nice. I saw one less than a week ago and thought about it but decided against it, I think this was in Tesco.
I bow to Arch's ever so gentle correction You're quite correct. And yes, we have some frozen croquettes in the freezer - lovely but no good for camping.
Oh and not Bratekertofel but leberkasen mit bratekertoffel...yum!
