The Phillips Navigator maps are good as well, I have the Cheshire and Lancashire ones at 100,000 scale. The OS "Tour" Travel maps are handy as well, again at 100,000. Obviously not as detailed as 50,000, but good enough to find the cafes !

Oooh, beware though. The mag variation is not always right, so it may be a bit iffy for accurate navigation.

The average user of such a map for having a ride out in the countryside is unlikely to find that a major issue I would have thought. I've managed to negotiate cycling many, many miles of country lanes without hassle using OS maps.

Thanks for the custom OS map tip! I think I will order the Landranger version. The cost doesnt matter as I would have to buy 2 maps anyway!!

Cheers.

OS have a good facility online, where you can order your own map, centred on a specific spot. Example - if your place is at the edge of one of the standard maps, you can order one online which is centred on your place. Ok, it costs more, (£15.99 for a Landranger) but it means you've got the map you want, if you see what I mean.

Hope the above helps
That's fantastic. New maps are on order.

However, did anyone else watch the advert...

That's a great link, WC, as a bit of nosing around also took me to the OS OpenData Viewer. I have both the local codes downloading as I type and a DVD with the whole of England on its way in the post. Without costing a penny.

Fantastic.
