Hi

Im considering a new phone. id like something with a rolling map or sat nav for when on my bike. Ive heard or read that people have apps that log their rides for them. Im new to this, how does it work etc, ive no idea

which phone is best, do i buy an iphone or get the htc desire on my virgin contract for a good price, do they do the same jobs?

any advice welcome, thanks

Dunno about whats 'best' but what works for me is my T-moble G1 (old 'smartphone') it uses the android operating system. The HTC desire uses it as well.

It comes with built in gps and I use googles 'my tracks' app, from the android marketplace, which will record my routes and speed, distance, climbimg, when out on the bike. You really need a Google account to make the most of it (actually don't know if you can use the phone without one). Once you've finished your ride and saved the route it can be sent to google so you can view it on your pc via google maps. Like one of my rides here

+1 for "my tracks" brilliantly simply piece of free software.

I was going to say, be careful posting your routes with "my tracks" on public forums, as it will show your house, but I assume you do not live in a premier inn!

Personally I think the iphone is overpriced, I had a great deal with Virgin for the desire, but had to return as I got a poor signal, now with Voda with the desire, and love it, realistically, I don't think any smartphone will be usuable on a bike, as the screen will be unreadable in direct sun.

I have an HTC Desire and run Endomondo for rides which seems pretty good it is another free android app that quite a few people on cc use hence the cc group.

I use Sports tracker which does speed, distance, and all the usual GPS info including position and elevation.
It also allows me to take photos and when I upload my run, all the pics are geotagged and inserted along my run.

It's very very cool - and it's free.

I can also add a bluettooth heart rate monitor too.

I have a BlackBerry for work, I've had them for work for about 5 years now, and they are great for work.

Hateful things for personal use, though. IMO.

HTC Desire Z has a keyboard and at least one on here has one and loves it.
