By all means go to Google maps, with various online mapping and route planning systems run by amateurs, BUT beware the maps are riddled with inaccuracies ... many roads don't appear, others do but don't exist.
OSM has some features that don't appear on (many) other maps. OS doesn't include many of the errors as it doesn't do that sort of mapping. Not really a like for like comparison, but I agree OS suits cycling a lot more than some other maps.
