I did the bike ride yesterday. My friend was involved in an accident between Haigh Hall and Preston (around the 30 mile mark). We where making great progress and where really moving when we came behind a group of young lads on mountain bikes riding 4 abreast moving at a really leisurely pace. My friend moved out into the middle of the road to try and overtake the group and as he pulled out to pass, him and one of the lads clipped each other and there was a pile up with four bikes/people going down. I managed to stop in time and stayed upright.

My friend really hit his head hard and was really dazed. His helmet was badly damaged, and luckily for him was the first time he had worn one. Best 40 quid he has ever spent.

Luckily the group of young lads seemed to be unharmed, and they carried on without any treatment.

My friend spent around 20 minutes in the back of the ambulance and was bandaged up.

Respect to him as he jumped back on his bike completed the course on a damaged bike and in absolute agony. He is a tough guy.

We completed in 4 hours 20 minutes, including the ambulance stop, which I thought was pretty good for a couple of guys who have been cycling for less than three months.

The wind made life very difficult after Preston didnt it?

we were late to the start (train conductor was a @r$e and wouldn't let all 6 of our group on the same train - so we had to get a later one!) and were last to set off at 10am! My first real ride of any length (biggest before was 25 miles) and I finished in 6 hours 15 mins! not bad for a fat lad who started cycling again 4 months ago!

really enjoyed it... apart from the wind which was like hitting a brick wall at Lytham green! all the way down the prom! I'm just happy I made it to the finish!

now.. how can I talk the wife into letting me get a road bike for next year?
