You've made me think now. Is this something I should add to my saddlebag? I've got water to clean a wound, but no plasters or bandages to protect it. Which or both?

I guess cable ties and frame pump would help in the event of a broken limb, and the frame itself could be used as a stretcher, chain as an emergency tourniquet.

Any other medical uses for bike parts or accessories?

Spare tube can also be used to immobilise broken limbs and can be used as a makeshift sling. Plus also it can be used as tourniquet which can be pumped up to apply more pressure.

unless you're hardcore mtbing you really don't want to do any of that stuff, its call an ambulance time. I've been taught both sets of first aid, for when you have an ambulance response and when you don't, there is actually disturbingly little you can do in the latter case, though splinting, slinging and imobilising is all quite doable

Must upgrade my bike first aid kit from a pack of cleenex some tape, disinfectanct, savlon and tablets

I carry a travel first aid kit that I bought from Boots in the pannier on my MTB. Having read this I realise that I should be carrying it in the racer as well but I don't want to fit a rack to it. I'll have to put my thinking cap on.

I've added a tube of Germolene to it, brilliant stuff, and a tube of Eurax antihistamine. I'd recommend this kit to anyone. I just bought it and added a couple of things.
I think it's about £8.

Nice one badger, I think cyclist are generally much more helpful than motorists. In my experiences their have been many times when I have either had a flat or a crash :S and motorists will cruise on past completely oblivious to my existence, where as many cyclist have stopped and helped me or even simply waved stopped just to make sure everything is ok.

As for helping motorists a few months ago a young 'boy racer' flipped his fiesta right in front of me on the Thorpe road out of Egham narrowly missing another cyclist. As the car came to rest wheels still spinning on its roof i jumped off my bike and ran to the crash. The young fellow was quite a mess and had an arterial bleed from his wrist. He crawled out of the car and collapsed, myself and the other cyclist put him in the recovery position and elevated his arm called an ambulance etc. What really got to me was the stupid little man driving a jaguar who had also witnessed the crash getting out of the car not to help as you might think but to shout at the boy tell him what an idiot he was and then to threaten police action. I understand that this man has a point but really? does it have to be made while the guy is bleeding out on the floor?

As for using bike parts as medical equipment my pannier bag was the perfect height to be used as a cushion for the lads head
Again well done badger a medical kit is swiftly going to find its way into my bag.

Thanx for all the plaudits..... My carrying of a first aid kit started from when me and my son would go biking down to the park; Just in case he hurt himself while on the climbing frame etc... I have used it on other peoples kids on a few occasions too and i usually have a couple of lollies (for being brave) in case i have to use a steri-wipe!!! Kids hate them..... The faces on the parents is great and on the main big park we go my son has had a few ice creams bought for him as a way to say thank you for our help. The girl i helped was in her 20's so she was a bit old for a lolly!!!!
