Got myself an mj-808 from DX. Got it on tuesday took out of box and connected it up and all was well. This morning was going to have a quick run out in the dark to see what it is like. and when i connected the battery to the light unit the light came on right away which it didn't do on tuesday. i then tried to change through the modes and it wouldn't change seems to be stuck on one mode. question is has anybody had this happen and has anybody had experience of returns to DX. Bit gutted really was going to be commuting tuesday onwards as i'm on dayshift. just have to put up with the smart halogens for a while longer. TIA

Mine has this problem but as I only ever use it on full belt it doesn't bother me. I bought mine through a UK website but haven't bothered returning it. I frequently use mine on 30mile night rides and it has never let me down.

thanks for the reply. now thinking about keeping it as it seems to be a bit of a pain doing returns to DX. i'm not sure if it is stuck on full power but it seems bright enough, probably a lot better than the halogens i have now.

Mine did this but once it ran down to the Red Display on the light and I then recharged the Battery on using it, the problem had cleared and now all modes work, hope yours does the same.

Don't try to run it down by leavving it on and not riding it as the Light Housing gets Hot, not sure if it would damage it, best while riding the air helps to cool the Housing.

I tried draining mine by leaving it on - and yes it gets incredibly hot. There must be a safety over-ride though as the light switched to a lower output when it got really hot, then full power returned after I'd waved it around in the air for a few seconds. I got mine from China, and the charger didn't work. I didn't fancy returning it, so bought another charger and its been fine. Still very cheap even with the extra purchase I had to make.

bit of an update. done 8 hrs commuting this week and switch only went to red on the last 2 hours and flashed on the last hour, so it looks to me that it isn't on full 900 lumens mode but still bright enough and better than the halogens. should i now recharge and hope it rectifies its self or should i run the light until it switches off and then recharge.

The problem GeoMan stated when they stopped selling the Magicshine battery was that the protective circuit designed to prevent over charging and over discharging was not up to the job. Apparently Li-Ion batteries do not like being over discharged/charged as this damages them and potentially can lead to it catching fire during charging.

You may have the problem mine came with - it was loose inside the casing.

The switch had to be pushed really hard to shift modes or turn on/off and it was a pain. Eventually it shut off unexpectedly. I took the front off and realised there's a second clamping ring inside that holds the circuit and switch in place against the back of the body. I tightened this up by pushing the ring round with a biro tip and the whole thing started working properly.

Fantastic light, I even use it on the commute in daylight. Nothing says "I'm here" like turning the inside of their car into a disco.

Useful info ref the battery thanks.

Probably been said before, but I pack the battery in a cut up old water bottle and keep it in the bottle cage.

yep i do that. bloke at work once asked me what it was as i was charging it. Told him it was an electrolytic drink that needed charging up.

He believed me as well!!

Be careful: the Magicshine does not have any protection against overheating - the LED will bake if you leave it on high without adequate airflow to cool it. I'd run it on low only if you want to drain the battery. In fact, it's a good idea to try and prevent any LED light from getting too hot, as heat can significantly reduce the life expectancy of the emitter.
