I avoid the toll road but accidently went on it once. I took the wrong exit on a roundabout and immediately turned around and came back, though a toll booth, and got charged. I had only done about 100 yards!

Sounds like you dropped of the M6 around junction 4a onto the section of the M42 that leads to the M6 toll and came of just before the junction where the M42 and the M6 Toll go their different ways, theres a couple of places round there you can drop of the motorway, its a bit complicated round there.

bit complicated??? it's a friggin mess on the southbound carriageway. when the hell are they going to finish it??? i never see anyone working on it. i'm from round here and sometimes i drive back from the Hinckley down the M42. i hate it because everyone's so fricking confused and jumping lanes at the last minute. cones and concrete bollard mess everywhere

Certainly the Eastern European lorry driver who I saw reversing (yes, really ;) )up the outside lane of the M6 at the point where it splits off into the M6 Toll/M42 North seemed to have found it confusing.

I don't run my own car, I drive a small van as part of my job. I had a five year gap between this driving job and my last, during that five years I didn't drive at all. They changed that part of the M6/M42 and built the toll whilst I wasn't driving. The first time I drove through there it confused the friggin hell out of me.

It's ok once you get used to it, and if you pay attention to the overhead signs. I come through the junction one way or another most days.

Agree with that Rhythm Thief. Confused me the first time, but soon got used to it.

But the signs are SO bad! It's like London, south of the river, where signs start off taking you places, then seem to run out...

Anyway, as I shall be doing the trip again in a few weeks, I shall this time be fore-warned, and keep to the left at all times!

if you went on without going through the toll booth, you may have been on the M6 toll, but you will have only gone such a short distance that you can only possibly have been going the wrong way - i.e. so your use of the toll road was completely pointless. Still, that's not to say you won't be caught up with and fined, if you were seen by an official.

The toll booths contain a credit card slot that you just put a card in and it *immediately* spits it straight back out again, no pin number, no receipt, or anything.
