My pedals arrived today. Just took off one of the original black plastic pedals to swap out my shiny new ones and what did I find.................The pedal bolt is too large for crank hole. So it looks as though as well as shoes I need a new bottom bracket and two piece crank as well. F'ink great.

What cranks have you got?

I thought pedals were all the same size, I don't ever re-call seeing different sizes.

But I'm no expert

What bike have you got?

One piece cranks take a 1/2" pedal thread, other cranks (2- or 3- piece) take 9/16".
If you get a bottom bracket something like this, you can use 3-piece cranks with your SPDs.

New problem to me. My early 1980s pedals are the same thread as my 2008 cranks.

Silly question - you are screwing them in the right way ? I seldom explain it correctly but one side is left thread and other side is right thread.

Sorry - not trying to insult in any way.

Well it was a huge surprise to me as well. Still looks as though I might be able to get the kit cheaper than I thought.

Never seen this before, not even on kids bikes.

Similar words were spoken this morning only the air was somewhat bluer!!!!! From what I can gather my bike has many design elements of old American Bikes (it's like an up-scaled BMX in fact). Still I have the nice people from were I bought the pedals doing some research for me and they promised to give me a call back today. I'm keep you peeps updated if you're interested.

Oh bugger.....that is odd...

You mean a normal chainset. Which if you change the BB is exactly what you need. Those new pedals are beginning to look expensive.

I don't understand why Landslide has posted that link. Is the BB shell on a one piece a different size and surely if that's meant for a BMX bike it will be a single chainwheel and hence not the right length for running a double or triple. Can you explain Landslide?

Hmm, quite possibly. I'd not thought of that. Though depends what chainset you get - there's plenty of variation in BB axle lengths between what ostensibly the same sort of chainset, e.g. old MTB chainsets took e.g. a 122mm axle, whereas more recent, low-profile ones run on e.g. 110mm.
