I've still got a couple of expensive bikes (five thousand and three thousand five hundred) insured with the Halifax - indeed, that's the only reason I stick with them. I'm told that new arrivals are restricted to two grand a bike, so I'm wondering if I'm going to have to move when the thing comes up for renewal. Any ideas?

You may be lucky and that Halifax will honour the original terms - as M&S did for a year - but I kind of doubt it. At least Halifax is giving new arrivals a £2000 limit. It is £1000 at M&S and then the premiums go up VERY steeply. I too would love to hear some more homeowner insurance suggestions for those of us with high-end bikes.

I've just remembered (which is funny, because the bit I remembered is about getting old). Saga. If you're over 50 they may be the answer to your prayers. The sky is the limit on bike values. The snag (and for us it's a big snag) is that they don't insure the bikes overseas. Given Agent Hilda's 3.15 am tramline experience in Gent we're better off with the Halifax for the moment, but if they do drop the limit then we might go to Saga and be very, very careful when abroad.

hiscox 505 policy (not cheap but very good claims response, I've had several with no quibble) covers contents of outbuildings (incl garage but not sheds) to £5000 on any claim, and:

Bicycles not inside the home or
an outbuilding or your garden up to £2,500 for any one bicycle.

That used to be £1000, and i had/have bikes worth more than that so had them registered on the policy for and extra premium which iirc was £200 for 4 bikes in range £1200-£2000
